What does this tool show?
This tool takes your annual income, calculates your estimated income tax using the current 2025-26 tax rates and offsets, then shows how that tax amount maps across the major categories of federal government spending - based on how the government allocated its total expenses in the 2025-26 federal budget. It is an illustrative apportionment, not a statement of where your specific dollars go.
Why is 'Other purposes' the second-largest category?
The 'Other purposes' category in the federal budget is largely made up of two significant items: GST revenue that is distributed to state and territory governments (which fund hospitals, schools, roads, and other services), and interest payments on government debt. Together these account for a substantial share of federal expenses each year, which is why this category ranks second in size.
Does this mean my tax literally goes to these categories?
No. Australian tax revenue is pooled into consolidated revenue and allocated by parliament through the appropriations process. There is no hypothecation (direct earmarking) of individual taxpayers' money to specific programs. This tool applies the overall budget spending mix to your income tax as an illustration of what proportion of federal expenses each category represents.
What is the HELP repayment note about?
If you toggle on the HELP / HECS option, the tool calculates your estimated compulsory HELP repayment based on your income. This repayment is a loan repayment - it goes toward reducing your study debt - not income tax. It is shown separately so you can see the full picture of what is deducted from your income, but it is not included in the tax distribution breakdown.
How current is the data?
The spending category figures are from the 2025-26 Australian Federal Budget, Budget Paper No.1, Statement 5: Expenses by function, released in March 2025. The tax rates use the 2025-26 income tax brackets, low-income tax offset (LITO), and Medicare levy as legislated. The archived budget papers are available at archive.budget.gov.au/2025-26.
What is included in 'Other functions'?
The 'Other functions' category in this tool groups together several smaller federal spending areas that individually make up a small share of the budget. This is a presentation choice to keep the chart readable - it is distinct from the official 'Other purposes' category (which covers GST distributions to states and debt interest, as noted above).
